Breed Description:
The Chow Chow is a medium-sized, compact and powerfully built dog averaging 17-22" at the withers and 45-65#. The skull is broad and flat with a short, broad, blunt muzzle; eyes are small, dark and almond shaped; ears are small, thick, triangular, pointed at the tip and erect; ; tail is curled over the back. Face has a distinctive "scowling" expression and the tongue is blue/black or mostly so. (*Please note: a black tongue alone is not enough to make the dog a purebred Chow.) The coat is long, thick and offstanding from the body with a distinctive lion-like ruff and bushy tail. Coat is plush, similar to a teddy bear. Chow Chows come in 5 colors: red, black, blue (grey), cinnamon (fawn) and cream (nearly white). Chows do not have discernible markings like spots, patches, socks or blazes.
